Periodontal Scaling and Root Planning
Periodontal scaling and root planning is recommended when a patient has Periodontal Disease. This is a conservative procedure as opposed to periodontal gum surgery.
It usually involves cleaning referred to as Periodontal Maintenance visits which are schedule between 3 - 4 times per year depending on the initial diagnosis of the type of Periodontal Disease that the patient is diagnosed with.
80% of the adult population have Periodontal Disease but are not aware of it because it is painless.
Not only is Periodontal Disease the number one reason for tooth loss, but current research is showing that there is an oral-systemic link via Periodontal Disease to ann increased risk with respect to cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, bacterial pneumonia, and preterm births during pregnancy. It is believed that the bacteria and inflammation associated with Periodontal Disease is cause effective.
