IF YOU HAVE CLIENTS WHO ARE HS ATHLETES, NCAA ATHLETES OR WEEKEND WARRIOR SPORTS ATHLETES
YOU CAN LET THEM KNOWING THAT THERE ARE TYPES OF MOUTHGUARD/MOUTHDEVICES AVAILABLE TO IMPROVE THERE PERFORMANCE
ON THE FIELD OR ON THE COURT
Michael represents High School or NCAA Team Captains that have been patients or clients of mine over the past 15 years.
THE FINAL THING I'D LIKE TO SAY IS A COMMENT I HEAR ALL TOO OFTEN:
Dr Portnoy speaking now:: "MICHAEL YOU ARE THE TEAM CAPTAIN AND THE BEST PLAYER ON YOUR TEAM, PLEASE TELL ME WHY YOU ARE NOT REFFERING YOUR TEAMMATES TO MY OFFICE FOR THESE MOUTHGUARDS SO THAT YOUR TEAM CAN BE MORE COMPETITIVE AND BETTER".
Michael replying now: "DOC THE REASON WHY I AM NOT REFERRING ANY OF MY TEAMMATES IS BECAUSE
I WANT TO STAY CAPTAIN AND BEST PLAYER ON MY TEAM"
For your HS Basketball athletes once you have them in the best physical shape just before their first game then
LET ME HELP ADD TO THEIR ABILITY TO JUMP
PRI (Postural Restoration Institute) has a posture based approach to management of athletes which considers the influence of the skeleton, muscles and dental occlusion on posture.
PRI is practiced by Physical Therapists, PT Assisants and Athletic Trainers. This approach to physical therapy management is called postural restoration.
They believe there is a "dental malocclusion component" that affects joints, muscles and skeletal function which results in an improperly aligned postural chain that can affect posture, especially forward head posture, breathing dynamics and full body movement.
They reccomend a MOOO (Mandibular Occipital Occlusal Orthotic) Splint Appliance for their athletes who fall into this category.
We use a combination of MORA TMJ Appliance Theory and PRI MOOO Splint Appliance Neutral Theory Positioning Incorprated into a Type III Mouthguard taking into consideration:
Dental Occlusion
TMJ
Body Asymmetry - Head,Shoulder, Hips, Pelvis, Knees
Vertebral Alignment - Postural Chain, OA and AA Space
Neck-Shoulder-Back-Trunk-Knee
Vertebral Alignment - Postural Chain, OA and AA Space
Muscle Recruitment
Cranio-Mandibular-Cervical Relationship as it relates to Posterior Rotation of the Cranium and Forward Head Posture
PUT IN SLIDE PRESENTATION OF FHP LECTURE
WHY IS FHP (FORWARD HEAD POSTURE) DETRIMENTAL TO AN ATHLETE's PERFORMANCE?
BECAUSE IT CREATES AND IMBALANCE FROM HIS
OTIC PLANE, ORBITAL PLANE, MANDIBULAR PLANE,
CLAVICLE PLANE, RIB CAGE PLANE, PRLVIC PLANE,
KNEE PLANE
YOU SEE ROUNDED SHOULDERS, HEAD TILT,
SHOULDER TILT, HIP TILT, KNEE TILT
YOUR BODY ACCOMMADATES FOR BUT CAN PERFORM
BETTER WITH BETTER POSTURAL ALIGNMENT
YOUR BODY IS WORKING HARDER BECAUSE IT IS LIKE
HAVING A PEBBLE IN YOUR SHOE WALKING AND THEN
YOU TRY TO RUN (IT STARTSBTOBGET MUCH HARDER
LET ALONE IMPOSSIBLE)
See postural respiration institute dr Paul coffin great explanation
POSTURAL RESTORATION INSTITUTE IS A UNIQUE TYPE OF PHYSICAL THERAPY LOOKING AT THE BODY's SKELETAL POSTURAL POSITION AND THE POTENTIAL MUSCULAR IMBALANCES THAT CAUSES DYSFUNCTION.
IF THERE ARE POSTURAL CHAIN MALALIGNMENTS THERE IS DYSFUNCTION
WHEN PROPERLY POSITIONED, ALIGNED AND BALANCED THE SKELETAL POSTURAL CHAIN JOINTS AND MUSCLE CAN WORK IN AN EFFICIENT MANNER.
WHEN THE HEAD, NECK, SHOULDERS, BACK, HIPS KNEES, AND FEET ARE ALIGNED, FUNCTIONING PROPERLY THAT IS YOUR NEUTRAL
ALSO INVOLVED ARE THEBDIAPHRAM, RIB CAGE, PELVIC MUSCLES. FOOT, TOOTH CONTACT,

I was 1 of approximately 75 dentists to take part in the Academy For Sports Dentistry - United State Olympic Committee Partnership in 2013 to be trained
for the ASD-USOC DVP Program. One of the goals were to educate these dentist to see whether you could Improve (Enhance) an Athletes Performance with Mouthguards/Mouthpieces.
Bill Moreau the Director of USOC at that time was a Chiropractor.
Chiropractors believe there is a strong correlation between Vertebral Alignment, Muscle Recruitment, Airway Dynamics and Athletic Performance.
The ASD USOC USOPC Partnership
google ASD USOC 2013
now in 2021 the ASD continues to build a strong parternership with USOPC the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee
The USOPC serves as both the National Olympic Committee and the National Paralympic Committee for the United States.
They are responsible for fielding US Teams for the Olympic, Paralympic, Youth Olympic, Pan American and
Parapan American Games
Dr P to comment on this article in ASD Newletter Summer 2021.
tell story of NE medical center work with MD patients for better head and stability. Dr Mehta Head of Tufts Gelb Craniofascial Pain Center made Mouthpieces at different VDO to strengthen their Cervical muscles. Therebresults indicated that by opening up their vertical they were able to improve their Cervical Muscular Strength
Dr Metha in Boston in 2013 talked about how changing the head and neck posture of an athlete their studies show that a better skeletal alignment leads to better cervical muscle Recruitment
All I am saying is wrt USOPC athletes if we can provide them with mouth devices at a proper VDO in a AP Lateral Neutral Position maybe we can give them better muscle recruitment, better airway space dynamics to result in better performance enhancement as a USOPC competing athlete.
Maybe USOC Wheelchair athletes would benefit utilizing mouthpieces and Mouthguards that focus on the type of VDO that Metha talked about to enhance their performance by improving their VDO as it realates to their head and neck alignment
there is an organization PRI a group of physical therapist who work with NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL teams.
Call Boston Sports Medicine to see if after their athletes return to play whether they recommend dental mouthpieces or Mouthguards to help with their vertebral alignment especially as it relates to FHP as well as OA and AA positioning.
It says you deal with high level sports rehabilitation
do you recommend dental mouthpieces and Mouthguards that are geared to realign cervical vertebra vs FHP
do you utilize dental appliance that focus on the occipital occlusal cervical spine relationship to put the athlete in a PRP.

They recommend utilizing a MOOO appliance for their athletes who have issues with their head and neck alignment . Their device is call a Mandibular Occipital Occlusal Orthotic dental splint. By their definition
This might be able to benefit a Paralympic athletes performance by using their principals of putting the head and neck in what they refer to as a neutral postion.
PRI Believes the position of your occlusion your bite is so contributing factor to your ability to maintain a proper resting position (Neutrality) for better alignment for your head and neck and c spine.
Maybe we can enhance their performance incorporating their principles into a mouthguard to add protection as well.
This particular partnership jiggled my memory about a symposium in 2009 at the Yankee Dental Congress in Boston on performance enhancing athletes with different types of mouth devices. In attendance was PPM, UA, Dr Gerard Maher, Brain-Pad. The moderator Nathan Birnbaum invited Dr Nosha Metha who was the Head of the Harold Gelb Craniofacial Pain Center at Tufts to start the Symposium off. Dr Metha talked about people with disabilities who had MS. What he said if I can remember it clearly the following. It was something thebTufts New England Medical Center Neurology Department as Dr Metha to participate in.
Story Metha Told that day I think can relate to Paralympic Athletes to enhance their performance.
I hope that I recollect it right.
here goes
just throwing this thought out there to chew on
